Common causes of lower back pain

2 minute read

Lower back pain is a common problem that affects people of all ages. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), it is the leading cause of job-related disability worldwide and a leading contributor to missed work days

There are many potential causes of lower back pain, and often times it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. However, some common causes include:

  1. Muscle strain: Lifting heavy objects, sudden movements, or improper lifting techniques can all lead to muscle strain in the lower back.
  2. Herniated disc: A herniated disc occurs when the soft, spongy material inside a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the outer layer and irritates the surrounding nerves. This can cause pain, numbness, and tingling in the lower back.
  3. Osteoarthritis: Osteoarthritis is a type of joint disease that causes the cartilage in the joints to break down, leading to pain, stiffness, and difficulty moving. It can affect the lower back as well as other joints in the body.
  4. Spinal stenosis: Spinal stenosis is a condition in which the spinal column narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness, and weakness in the lower back.
  5. Poor posture: Slouching or sitting in one position for extended periods of time can lead to poor posture and subsequently cause lower back pain.

There are many other potential causes of lower back pain, including spinal fractures, kidney stones, and infections. It is important to see a healthcare professional if you are experiencing persistent or severe lower back pain, as they will be able to diagnose the cause and recommend treatment options.
